Most people are confused on when to call an item antique. General items older than 100 years are called antique. By law an antiques are “works of art (except rugs and carpets made after the year 1700), collections in illustration of the progress of the arts, marble, works in bronze, terra cotta, pottery or porcelain, parian, artistic antiquities, and objects of educational value or ornamental character that exist or shall have been produced prior to the year 1830. An item cannot be called antique if 50% of its composition has been repaired or restored.” Nowadays antique is applied to many items to give them an old character, and communicate that the item has history. You should also not confuse antique and vintage. Items that are between 50 and 100 years old are called vintage. Antique items are largely classified by type, and where they come from. Some of the more popular categories include;
• Decorative arts
• Maritime items
• Dishware and cutlery
Rare antiques can fetch very high amounts up to millions of dollars. Paintings by famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci are priceless. Very old antiques are highly sought after for example items from Ancient Egypt or the Roman Empire. Rare precious metal items always have a ready market as well as crafted items like vases, statues and pendants.
